·Area Sketcher

Need to measure land area from Google Maps satellite view? Here's how to do it for free with Area Sketcher in four steps.

Why measure area on Google Maps satellite view?

Google Maps satellite view gives you a bird's-eye look at any property on earth. Combine that with a drawing tool and you can measure:

  • Lot size and acreage for property purchases
  • Roof area for roofing quotes or solar panel estimates
  • Field area for farming and crop planning
  • Yard size for landscaping, fencing, and paving projects

No need to visit the site. No surveyor required for a quick estimate.

1. Search any address

Open the Google Maps satellite view calculator and type an address, city, or landmark into the search bar. The map jumps to that location instantly. Works for any address worldwide.

2. Switch to satellite view

Click Satellite in the toolbar to see high-resolution aerial imagery. You can also toggle back to Road view if you need street names for reference.

Zoom in until you can clearly see the boundaries of what you want to measure. Use scroll wheel on desktop or pinch-to-zoom on mobile.

3. Draw your measurement

Pick a tool:

  • Area: click to place points around a shape (roof, lot, field). Click the first point to close the polygon and see the area in sq ft or sq m.
  • Length: click two or more points to measure a distance (fence line, road frontage, property edge).

Each measurement is color-coded and appears in the measurements panel with its name and value.

4. Save your work

Measurements auto-save to your browser. For a permanent backup, click Download to export a project file. You can upload it later to pick up where you left off.

Tips for accurate measurements

  • Zoom in as far as the satellite imagery allows before placing points. Small placement errors add up.
  • Use road view to cross-reference street names and parcel boundaries.
  • Name your measurements (e.g. "Front yard", "Garage roof") so you can tell them apart.
  • Toggle units between ft/m in the measurements panel.

Who uses this?

  • Homeowners estimating materials for outdoor projects
  • Roofers calculating roof area for quotes without climbing up
  • Farmers measuring field acreage for seed and fertilizer planning
  • Solar installers sizing roof and ground-mount systems
  • Real estate agents verifying lot sizes from listings
  • Landscapers quoting sod, gravel, paving, and fence work
